National Institutes of Health MD/PhD Partnership Training Program


The MD/PhD PartnershipTraining Program is designed to encourage the success and development of students pursuing a future as physician-scientists in basic and translational biomedical research. The program fosters innovative and interdisciplinary PhD partnerships in an accelerated setting with a completion time of approximately four years. Scholars enrolled in this program have the opportunity to take advantage of the unique resources available at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), including the NIH Clinical Research Center and the many options for collaboration provided by the NIH Graduate Partnerships Program (GPP).

Application Deadline: Late Fall/Early Winter (November – December)

Eligibility Requirements:

  • The NDSEG Fellowship Program is open only to U.S. citizens or U.S. nationals. Dual citizens may apply. Persons who hold permanent resident status are ineligible to apply.
  • Eligible applicants are required to be enrolled in their final year of undergraduate studies through the second year of a traditional PhD program. See below for a breakout of eligibility criteria:
  • Undergraduate Students (degree must be received prior to the Fellowship Start date)
  • Recent Bachelor’s Degree Recipients
  • Graduate Students (1st year, 2nd year)
  • Recent Master’s Degree Recipients
  • Pre-Doctoral Students (1st year, 2nd year)
  • Dual MD-PHD Students
  • Dual PSYD-PHD Students
  • Applicants who are pursuing a Medical Degree are not eligible for the NDSEG fellowship.
  • Applicants must plan to enroll in a full-time program at an accredited U.S. institution of higher education leading to graduate degrees in fields specified in the DoD services Broad Agency Announcements (BAAs) research and development discipline
  • Applicants must plan to enroll in a full-time program at an accredited U.S. institution of higher education leading to graduate degrees in fields specified in the DoD services Broad Agency Announcements (BAAs) research and development discipline.
